Hi and thank you for joining me on today's blog post coming from a very dull and overcast top of the hill here in Ilfracombe.
The sky all around is grey and there is a modest breeze blowing. I cannot see the Bristol Channel today - something that is normally visible from my office window.
Last night I had a wonderful "catch up" with Marc over a couple of drinks at The Thatched Inn - it seemed very odd going to a pub to have a drink for the first time in many, many months. It also seemed weird having to sit outside and order the drinks through a serving hatch.
But, I detract from the main topic of today's post - the controversial subject of a lady called "Verity"
"Verity" is a sculpture created by the artist Damien Hirst and this piece has been on loan to the town but that loan period is sadly* coming to an end.
During this time she has been a major talking point and whether or not you like her, she has brought a large number of visitors to Ilfracombe and with them a lot of tourist £s and $s have gone to local businesses within the locality.
There are those who see her as an asset to the area, whilst conversely there are those who view her as a "eyesore" a "blot on the landscape"and an "affront" to local decency.
Damien (an acquaintance) and other members of his family lived in Ilfracombe and the surrounding areas for many years during which time he provided employment for a number of local residents of the town.
However, he eventually moved away and subsequently closed his various businesses although he still retained the connection because of "Verity"
So now as we approach the end of the loan period it is unclear (to the author) what the future holds for this conversation piece of art.
Personally, I hope that she remains although there are many local folk who would be glad to wave her "goodbye" once and for all.

.*depending on your position - whether you love her or loathe her
